For curious kids, ages 5 to 13
The safe way for kids to grow up with AI.
AI is part of the world your child is growing up in. Sugar is a teacher they can ask anything, by typing or by talking, and it shows them how to use AI well. Every answer is written for their age and checked by a second AI.
Ask me anything!
No ads
Sugar shows no ads, and the app has no analytics or tracking.
No account for your child
No sign-up, no profile, no name. Sugar never asks who they are.
Chats stay on the device
Saved on your iPhone or iPad only. Delete them all from parent settings.
Why start now
Kids will use AI all their lives. Sugar teaches them how.
Keeping AI away from children only works for a while, and adult chatbots are not built for them. Sugar is a first AI that builds good habits from the first question.
Ask a better question
After every answer, Sugar suggests a next question in your child’s own words, so asking more becomes a habit.
Ask why
Answers start short. Your child taps “Why?” or “For example” to go deeper instead of stopping at the first answer.
Keep private things private
If your child types a phone number, address or email, Sugar doesn’t send it and explains why.
Bring big questions home
For beliefs, worries, or anything that feels unsafe, Sugar sends your child to you.
How it answers
Short answers. Then “Why?” and “For example.”
Sugar answers in a few warm sentences. Your child taps to go deeper, then gets a next question to keep going. Pick a level to see how the answers change.
For parents
You set it up once. They ask away.
- 1
Set a passcode
Four digits keep every setting, and deleting chats, behind you.
- 2
Pick their level
Little (5–7), Big (8–10) or Older (11–13). Sugar writes for that age.
- 3
Connect OpenRouter
Sign in or paste a key, then choose the AI model. Done in about two minutes.
Safety
Four checks on every question.
General chatbots are built for adults. Sugar is built for one child, and it checks its own work.
Private details never leave
Phone numbers, street addresses, emails and links are caught on the device. Sugar answers “Let’s keep that private” and sends nothing.
Rules written for their age
Every question goes with Sugar’s rules: no weapons, drugs, sexual content, gore or scary stories, and no rude words in any disguise.
A second AI reads every answer
Before your child sees a reply, a separate safety model checks it against those rules. If it fails, your child sees “Let’s talk about something else!”
Points them to a grown-up
If your child says they are hurt, scared or unsafe, Sugar is kind, says it is not their fault, and tells them to tell a grown-up they trust right away.
Big questions stay with you.
Is Santa real? What happens in heaven? Who should win the election? Sugar never decides for your family. It says families believe different things, and that you can talk about it together.
No AI or filter is perfect. Sugar is a learning companion, not a replacement for a grown-up nearby.
Talk or type
Ask out loud. Hear the answer.
Kids who can’t type yet tap Talk and ask. Sugar reads its answer aloud. Speech is turned into text on the device, so Sugar sends the words, never the recording.
Make it theirs
Their Sugar, their way.
Your child taps Sugar to pick one of 18 shapes and 6 colors, and the whole app changes to match. Try it, then tap Sugar to make it hop.

Sugar Pro
Your rules, on top of ours.
Set up each child from any browser. Choose the topics Sugar talks about, add your own rules, and write instructions in your own words. Changes reach their iPhone or iPad right away.
Mia’s Sugar
Model: Claude Haiku 5.5Topics
Your rules
- Don’t talk about sharks. They scare Mia.
- Suggest a picture book about the topic when you can.
Custom instructions
Answer in English, then say the same answer in Spanish.
Sugar’s safety rules and the second AI check always apply. Your settings are added on top and can’t switch them off.
Topic selection
Turn whole subjects on or off for each child. Sugar steers gently back to what you allow.
Custom rules
“Hints, not answers, for homework.” Plain sentences that Sugar follows in every chat.
Custom instructions
Answer in two languages, follow your homeschool plan, or use the examples your child loves.
Privacy
We never keep your child’s questions.
With your own key, Sugar talks to OpenRouter directly. On a paid plan, questions pass through our server on the way and are not logged or stored. The parent view syncs through your own iCloud, and the Pro control center keeps your settings, never your child’s chats.
- Only AI providers that don’t store prompts or train on them
- Chats saved on the device, never uploaded
- No analytics, no tracking, no ads
- Only the last few turns are sent with each question

Questions from parents
Why give my child an AI at all?
Your child will meet AI at school, at friends’ houses and later at work. Learning to use it in a place built for their age, with your rules, teaches good habits early: asking follow-up questions, asking why, keeping personal details private, and bringing big questions to a grown-up.
What ages is Sugar for?
Children from 5 to 13. You choose one of three levels: Little (5–7) gets one or two short sentences about everyday things, Big (8–10) covers school topics and how things work, and Older (11–13) gets fuller explanations, including harder science and news at a middle-school level.
Do I need an OpenRouter account?
Only on the free plan. OpenRouter gives one account access to AI models from many companies, and you pay it directly for what your child uses. With Sugar Plus there is nothing to set up: Sugar handles the AI for you.
How much does Sugar cost?
Sugar is free to download. Add your own OpenRouter key and Sugar stays free; OpenRouter charges roughly $0.20 to $4.00 per 1,000 answers, depending on the model. Or choose Sugar Plus ($4.99 a month) for no setup and a parent view, or Sugar Pro ($9.99 a month) to also control topics, rules and instructions from the web. Both cost a third less when paid yearly.
Can I cancel a paid plan?
Yes, anytime from your account on meetsugar.app. Sugar keeps working on the free plan with your own OpenRouter key.
Can custom rules or instructions switch off Sugar’s safety?
No. In Sugar Pro, your topics, rules and instructions are added on top of Sugar’s own safety rules, never in place of them, and the second AI still checks every answer. You can make Sugar stricter or more personal, not less safe.
What does the web control center store?
Your parent account and the settings you choose: topics, rules, instructions and models for each child. It never stores your child’s chats. Those stay on the device, and with the parent view they sync only through your own iCloud.
What happens to what my child types or says?
Voice is turned into text on the device; the recording is never sent. The text of the question, with the last few turns of the chat, goes through OpenRouter to the AI model and to the safety model. With your own key, it goes straight to OpenRouter. With Sugar Plus or Pro, it passes through our server, which forwards it and keeps nothing. Chats are saved only on the device, and there are no analytics in the app.
Can my child change the settings or turn off the rules?
No. Settings and deleting chats sit behind your passcode. The safety rules cannot be turned off by anyone, and Sugar is told to ignore requests to ignore them. Your child can start new chats and reopen old ones.
What does Sugar say about Santa, religion or politics?
Sugar does not say whether Santa, the Tooth Fairy, God or a religion is real, and it does not take sides in politics. It tells your child that families believe different things and their grown-up can talk with them about it.
Is Sugar available in my language?
This website is available in English, French (Canada), Spanish, Russian, Ukrainian and Chinese. The Sugar app itself is in English for now. Join the waitlist to hear when more languages arrive.
Is Sugar always right? Is it always safe?
No AI is right every time, and no filter catches everything. Sugar is built to make mistakes rare and harmless, but it is a learning companion, not a replacement for a grown-up. Stay nearby, especially with younger children.
Which devices does Sugar run on?
iPhone and iPad with iOS 27 or later. Sugar needs an internet connection to answer.
